CBD Oils And Tinctures–What To Know

Are Oils and Tinctures the Same?

CBD oils are different from BD tinctures--they are produced differently and may have different modes of action. We’re here to break it down for you.

What is CBD?

In the Cannabis sativa plant, there are many phytochemicals, and CBD, or cannabidoil, is one of them. Although more research is needed on CBD and its effects on the body, most prominent researchers and the World Health Organization (WHO) are agreed that CBD is beneficial for many health conditions in humans and animals.

Is CBD Legal?

It is legal on a federal level to sell and consume hemp-derived CBD products, as long as the products have less than 0.3% THC. Hemp-derived CBD products, unfortunately, are still illegal under some state laws, which can get confusing. On the opposite end, CBD products derived from cannabis are still currently illegal federally but they are legal under some state laws, so be sure to check the local legislation where you live so that you are not participating in illegal activity. This becomes especially important if you are traveling. Currently, the FDA has not yet approved nonprescription CBD products, as more research is needed.

What is the Difference Between CBD Oil and Tinctures?

Although these products are similar, the main difference between them is the method that is utilized to extract the CBD from the hemp. Manufacturers use carbon dioxide to extract the CBD from hemp in oils, and for tinctures, alcohol is used for extraction. The way that is fastest, most efficient, and safest environmentally to extract CBD is with heat, pressure, and carbon dioxide.

With CBD tinctures, the cannabis is soaked in alcohol and then slowly heated, infusing the CBD with the alcohol, which is then boiled or diluted.

These different extraction methods yield different products. While tinctures are usually alcohol or glycerin-based solutions, CBD oils contain CBD that is suspended in a carrier oil. Oils will generally be more potent, and can be used topically or orally, while it is not recommended to use tinctures on the skin.

CBD has displayed a remarkable ability to aid in the treatment of many health problems for the following reasons:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: Researchers have proven that CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, which can aid in the treatment of many painful conditions. In a study done in 2018, testing found that oral forms of CBD can be anti-inflammatory as well.
  • A reduction in chronic pain: In a study performed in 2019, researcher found that chronic pain can be reduced with regular use of CBD, even pain that has persisted for years. A remarkable 94% of patients reported a marked improvement in their quality of life. Another small study performed in 2020 found that CBD is helpful in reducing cold, itchy sensations, sharp pains, and even intense pain.
  • Anti-anxiety effects: In a study done in 2015, researchers found that CBD can help with the reduction of anxiety-related behaviors. Another studydone in 2019 supports these findings, and found that CBD can lower anxiety in people suffering from anxiety and sleep disorders, which are increasingly common.

Remember to consult with your doctor before trying out CBD products, and discuss its use for your medical condition. There are very few adverse effects with short-term use of CBD according to the current research, but there may be some potential long-term effects that it is important to be aware of.
